Blythe body comparison

Blythe body comparison

From left to right: Kenner, Takara, Obitsu 21cm, Licca, Pure Neemo

There are noticeable differences in the shape of each doll but overall, the sizes are very similar. Liccas have very broad shoulders while the Pure Neemo bodies have wider hips and a thicker waist. The Obitsu 21cm body has smaller proportions overall creating a more childlike look.

I think each body has its merits.

The Obitsu bodies need minor modifications to support a Blythe head -- rubberbands or some sort of malleable plastic to support the neck joint and foam or felt in the hip and torso joints to support the overall weight. My Obitsu body still wobbles a little bit in the neck joint but I like the slight movement in the neck for expressions. With those modifications, the Obitsu body is excellent especially since it is so poseable and can often balance on its own. The 21cm Obitsu is slightly shorter than the other bodies.

The metal in the Licca bodies which allow the arms and legs to bend can become brittle and break with use. See SquirrelJunkie's arm repair photos for one example. My original BL Licca body broke a leg awhile back so as fun as they are to pose, they are not super durable. Liccas are a smidge shorter than Takara and Kenners.

The Pure Neemo are very sturdy feeling made with a solid resin plastic but the joints can easily slide apart. This is both a good and bad issue. Its good that body parts are easy to swap out since the original Neemo bodies are mostly rigid except for being able to rotate hands, arms and legs in a circular motion. There is some adjustment in the mid-arm and mid-leg to turn hands and feet in and out. I have the Flexion body as well which is slightly more jointed. The Neemo bodies are the tallest.

Kenner and Takara bodies are almost identical in terms of size and movement though the neck joins are different. Knees on both bodies click into place and arms only move in a circular motion. As they are considered the most authentically Blythe, they have their own charms.

I bought myself a cheap heart rate monitor to see what was going on during one of my cycle rides. Today was the first time I tried it. It was a ride that lasted 1hr and 25mins in total with an average speed of 16.2mph. My average heart rate was 156bpm, max was 183bpm and it even works out calories based on body weight, which came to 1,437. A handy little device that will let me monitor my progress (or lack of it).

Bleeding to Ease the Pain: Cutting, Self-Injury, and the Adolescent Search for Self (Abnormal Psychology)

Cutting and other forms of self-injury are often cries for help, pleas for someone to notice that the pain is too much to bear. As Plante discusses here, the threat of suicide must always be carefully evaluated, although the majority of cutters are not in fact suicidal. Instead, cutting represents a rapidly spreading method for teens hoping to ease emotional pain and suffering. Bleeding from self-inflicted wounds not only helps to numb the cutter and vent despair, it can also be a dramatic means of communicating, controlling, and asking for help from others. Plante describes the frightening developmental tasks teenagers and young adults face, and how the central challenges of the three Is (Independence, Intimacy, and Identity) compel them to cope through self-destructive acts. Readers will come to a better understanding of these struggling teenagers and the dramatic methods they employ to ease and overcome their internal pain through a desperate need to cut and self-injure.

You guys didn't think I was trying to get myself out of my weigh in did you? Well, I didn't forget....as a matter of fact, it's been on my mind all week. I had a hard time...not in resisting temptation, but with just being hungry all the time....and cranky(ier).
I tried to get myself to lose weight by simply cutting back on calories, which normally works...but really? It sucks! I'm missing the most important element of this whole process: exercise. I've been complaining about my feet lately- my heels have been hurting so tomorrow I'm buying myself a new pair of Asics....and a jump rope. It's time for an ass whoopin' cross training session. It's time to sweat, run, jump, and not stop until I'm sucking wind. It might sound like torture, but really....I think it beats being hungry.
Total weight lost this week: 1.1 lbs.

I wasn't too happy about it until my friend said, "Well, one pound a week equals 52 pounds in a year, so.... it's not bad."

Also, did you know that for every pound you lose, your knees think you lost 5. :)

2 December 2007 Day 55

2 December 2007 Day 55

I don't think I need to lose weight. None of my friends or family think I do. My BMI is 22. So why is that every time I have to see a dietician, they give me a meal plan that cuts my calories no matter what I say? Why is it that just about every doctor I see assumes I'm trying to lose weight, or recommends that I do?

It's because I'm diabetic.

I used to weigh 10 lbs less. For years, I had been underweight. In March of 2006, my doctor put me on Actos because they thought I was a Type 2. I gained 10 lbs (of fat) in less than a month before I stopped taking it. I changed shape - I didn't gain in places and patterns that I would normally. I have TRIED to lose this weight, but nothing touches it, so I gave up. I threw out all my old clothes and bought new ones, four sizes bigger.

Every time someone says I should lose weight because I'm diabetic, I cringe.

5 Tasty Tips for Healthy Snacking

5 Tasty Tips for Healthy Snacking

When family schedules go into overload, healthy eating is easily overlooked. And when time is tight, it’s even more important for snacks to pack a nutritional punch. For busy families on the go, try these healthy snacking tips from chef and registered dietitian Michelle Dudash.

1. Plan Ahead. Carrying family snacks in your purse, car or gym bag while out and about can prevent vending machine and drive-through slip-ups. Apples, California Raisins, nuts and whole-grain crackers serve as great portable options.

2. Find the Perfect Snack Pairings. A blend of nutritious fats, complex carbs and lean proteins can help curb appetites. Consider a cheese stick and pear slices, fruited Greek yogurt or trail mix.

3. Refuel Your Body Naturally. The first 30 minutes after any physical activity is the most critical time for parents and kids alike to replenish the body’s energy stores. Reboot with a natural snack like a handful of California Raisins, which also contains antioxidants and fiber.

4. Curb Those Cravings. A healthy bite after school can keep the kids satisfied until dinner. Try carrot sticks and sugar snap peas dipped in hummus, a strawberry banana smoothie or a brown rice cake spread with natural peanut butter topped with banana slices.

5. Treat Yourself With Decadent Alternatives. Satisfy your chocolate cravings with nutrient-rich combinations, like strawberries dipped in dark chocolate syrup and rolled in slivered almonds or whole-grain crackers with natural chocolate hazelnut spread.

Next time that late afternoon hunger strikes, reach for this sweet and savory “Reboot” Trail Mix with California Raisins!

Afternoon “Reboot” Trail Mix with California Raisins

2 cups cocoa roasted almonds
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup natural California Raisins
1 cup pistachio kernels
1/2 cup golden California Raisins
1/2 cup cashews

Place almonds and cinnamon in large bowl; toss well to coat. Add remaining ingredients and toss again. Store in an airtight container. This recipe may also be prepared with 2 cups of cinnamon almonds tossed with 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder. Shake off excess cocoa in a colander before mixing with other ingredients.

She's on my mind

She's on my mind

(This is so unnecessarily long, I'm so sorry. Please feel free to skip to the end)

I posted two months ago that we were taking Pansy here and her brother Tyson to the PSPCA to get checkups and shots up to date. We asked about her weight loss and were told it was likely worms and/or her age and pretty much brushed off. We had to go back a month later anyway for a second round of shots, so we heard what we wanted to hear, I think.

So we brought them back on February 25th and had them give both dogs de-wormer medication as a precaution and brought a stool sample from Pansy. They saw no evidence of worms, but said she could still have them. We then asked for blood work to be done just in case. We had to be really insistent about it, and I think that is because the PSPCA is not used to people wanting to spend any "extra" money (and to be truthful, the cheaper rates was why were were there in the first place).

They said the blood work would take a couple of days and someone would call me. It was a Wednesday, so I gave them until the Monday following before calling. It was the day of a big snowstorm here, and nobody answered the phones. I called again the next day and left a message with someone.

I called back a week later and left a message on their machine with two phone numbers where I could be reached. I called again when it was 2 weeks past and spoke to man who I left my numbers with and expressed angst that it had been so long. He promised me someone would call me back THAT DAY.

I called again Friday...two and a half weeks after the appointment...and explained to the woman who answered how long I had been waiting for a call, and that I would not be getting off the phone until someone came on and told me what the results were. She was super nice (thank you Mary!) and told me to hang on. 10 minutes later she came on to reassure me that I was not forgotten and she was still getting me someone. 10 more minutes and the vet came on.

The vet came on and told me that Pansy's blood work was ABNORMAL. Her kidneys "are not functioning right," and that's about as much as I could understand. Unfortunately this Dr. had a very thick Indian accent coupled with NO bedside manner, and it was so hard to understand what he was saying. I got that Pansy could get an X-ray with them but that an ultrasound would be better, and they don't have an u/s machine. I was and am SO FURIOUS at them for making me hunt down the results...I had assumed they must have been normal for them not to return my messages (3! messages).

My BFF Cecily was a vet tech for many years (many years ago now, but still), so I asked her if I could have the results faxed to her directly. She reviewed them and talked with her vet to make sure she was reading the numbers right, and called me back. My understanding is that Pansy is possibly in early renal failure, but that we can manage it with diet and medication and she can still live a long time.

Of course we go into panic and all sorts of worst-case scenarios, but we are trying to stay calm and take things one step at a time. The first step is to call tomorrow to get her an appointment at our local vet to review her blood work and decide if an ultrasound is an urgent necessity, or if we can try diet/medication and see if there is any change first. The one place I called that has an u/s machine and is supposed to be very affordable said the ultrasound costs $360.00, but that included their $40 consult with a doctor. I'm certain we won't find cheaper than that.

Keep her in your thoughts, will ya? xoxo
